BATTLE UP FRONT: No. 13 Texas Tech Defeats Oregon State 35–24 in a Fourth-Quarter Trench Fight
By the Starts Up Front National & Global Recruiting Board
CORVALLIS, Ore. — No. 13 Texas Tech survived a determined Oregon State challenge Saturday night, scoring 14 unanswered fourth-quarter points to secure a 35–24 victory at Reser Stadium.
In front of 30,539 spectators, the Red Raiders improved to 2–0 while Oregon State fell to 0–2. The scoreboard told the final story, but the battle within the battle unfolded along the offensive and defensive fronts.
Texas Tech’s Offensive Line Finishes the Fight
Texas Tech opened with an offensive line consisting of:
- Jordan Church
- Hunter Zambrano
- Jacob Ponton
- Sheridan Wilson
- Howard Sampson
The Red Raiders’ offensive front helped produce 155 rushing yards on 46 attempts and three rushing touchdowns. Texas Tech finished with 22 first downs, converted 8 of 16 third downs, went 1-for-1 on fourth down and scored on all three red-zone opportunities.
The line’s most important work came after Texas Tech fell behind 24–21 early in the fourth quarter. The Red Raiders answered with two touchdown possessions and controlled the closing minutes to complete the comeback.
There were still areas requiring correction. Oregon State registered four sacks for 24 lost yards and six tackles for loss. Texas Tech’s offensive line nevertheless protected well enough during the decisive stretch for the Red Raiders to score 14 unanswered points and leave Corvallis with the victory.
Texas Tech’s Defensive Front Eliminates the Running Game
The Red Raiders’ defensive front forced Oregon State into a one-dimensional attack. The Beavers managed only 69 rushing yards on 21 attempts, averaged 3.3 yards per carry, recorded only four rushing first downs and failed to score a rushing touchdown.
Texas Tech finished with two sacks for 13 yards, four tackles for loss totaling 23 yards and five quarterback hurries as a team.
A.J. Holmes Jr. Leads the Interior Production
Defensive lineman A.J. Holmes Jr. delivered Texas Tech’s strongest individual performance up front:
- 4 total tackles
- 3 solo tackles
- 1 assisted tackle
- 1 sack for a 10-yard loss
- 1 tackle for loss
- 1 quarterback hurry
Holmes supplied interior disruption against both the run and pass. His 10-yard sack represented the largest individual loss created by a Texas Tech defender during the game.
Mateen Ibirogba Creates Pressure
Starting defensive lineman Mateen Ibirogba, featured on the SUFRB National College Game of the Week graphic, recorded one quarterback hurry. Although he did not register a tackle, his pressure contributed to a defensive front that kept Oregon State out of the rushing touchdown column.
Defensive tackle Bryce Butler added two assisted tackles, giving the Red Raiders additional production and depth inside.
Oregon State’s Offensive Line Produces Through Pass Protection
Oregon State started the following offensive line:
- Teko Shoats
- Van Wells
- Josiah Timoteo
- Nathan Elu
- Tyler Voltin
The Beavers’ front helped the offense accumulate 472 total yards, including 403 passing yards, while surrendering only two sacks on 50 passing attempts.
Oregon State recorded 20 first downs and scored on both of its red-zone appearances. However, the offensive line could not establish a consistent rushing presence, particularly when the Beavers needed to protect their fourth-quarter lead.
The Beavers converted only 4 of 15 third-down opportunities and 1 of 3 fourth downs. Texas Tech’s pressure ultimately helped end Oregon State’s final two meaningful possessions on failed fourth-down attempts.
Oregon State’s Defensive Line Brings the Heat
Despite the loss, Oregon State’s defensive line delivered several disruptive performances. The Beavers finished with four team sacks for 24 yards, six tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.
Takari Hickle Makes His Presence Felt
Edge defender Takari Hickle produced one of the strongest trench performances of the night:
- 3 total tackles
- 2 solo tackles
- 1 assisted tackle
- 1 sack for a 9-yard loss
- 1 tackle for loss
- 1 forced fumble
- 1 quarterback hurry
Hickle’s speed and power off the edge repeatedly challenged Texas Tech’s protection. His strip-sack created a fourth-quarter takeaway that allowed Oregon State to take a 24–21 lead.
Daniel Matagi Delivers Interior Pressure
Defensive tackle Daniel Matagi was equally productive inside:
- 4 total tackles
- 1 solo tackle
- 3 assisted tackles
- 1 sack for a 6-yard loss
- 1 tackle for loss
Matagi consistently fought through the interior of Texas Tech’s offensive line and supplied Oregon State with both run defense and pass-rush production.
Tyler Bailey Recovers the Turnover
Defensive tackle Tyler Bailey recorded:
- 4 total tackles
- 1 solo tackle
- 3 assisted tackles
- 1 fumble recovery
Bailey recovered the fumble created by Hickle, completing one of Oregon State’s biggest defensive plays of the game.
Additional Oregon State defensive-line production included:
- Jacob Schuster: 2 assisted tackles
- Tevita Pome’e: 2 assisted tackles
- Nick Norris: 1 solo tackle
- Niklas Fisher: 1 solo tackle
- Will Haverland: 1 assisted tackle
- Adrian Onyeigo: 1 assisted tackle
Collectively, those nine Oregon State defensive linemen accounted for 19 total tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one quarterback hurry.
SUFRB Trench Verdict
Oregon State’s defensive front won several individual battles, especially through the pass-rush production of Takari Hickle and Daniel Matagi. The Beavers created four sacks and forced Texas Tech’s offense into difficult situations throughout the night.
Texas Tech, however, won the most important snaps.
The Red Raiders’ offensive line helped generate three rushing touchdowns, remained composed after surrendering the fourth-quarter lead and supported two late scoring possessions. Defensively, Texas Tech’s front removed Oregon State’s running game and forced the Beavers to operate almost exclusively through the air.
That was the difference.
Oregon State created disruption, but Texas Tech displayed the late-game consistency, physical endurance and execution necessary to finish the job.
Final Score: No. 13 Texas Tech 35, Oregon State 24.
